DMZ. For most people those three letters don’t say much. Except if they are from Korea or if they, like me, have visited the country.

DMZ means demilitarised zone and describes the border in between South Korea and the Peoples Republic of Korea. The small and poor country that everyone knows because it threatens to blow up the whole world all the time.

I visited Korea (South Korea) a couple of times but only on business trips so I only know Seoul and Busan. I never visited the DMZ and I have no plans to go there. It means nothing to me but most of all because I think it is a depressing place. I don’t know a lot of South Korea and even less of the PRK but I know that it once was one country. Just like Germany.

I was 20 years old when the wall came down and I can still remember the day like it was yesterday. I visited Berlin in 1990 when the wall was painted by artists and when there was still a western and an eastern part of the city. I rented hammer and chisel and knocked some rocks out of the wall as a souvenir. It was history! Shortly after
