Adobe has just announced a major update to Photoshop. One of the highlight features is AI sky replacement powered by Adobe Sensei. Sky replacement has been around for some time courtesy of Skylum’s Luminar 4 software but Adobe should have the chops to bring something new to the table?

The image below was generated using default options and a sky image that I took recently of a sunset. The landscape scene was taken at dawn on the Camel Estuary in Cornwall, UK

Photoshop 2021 did a pretty good job. The full-size crop shows that the AI masking has done a pretty neat job of the tricky areas of the mast of the boat and ropes. Luminar has some sliders to help with closing any gaps and artefacts but Adobe use their tried and tested selection refinement brush which works very well

Adobe Photoshop 2021 vs Skylum Luminar 4 – Sky Replacement

Skylum have had a Sky Replacement feature for some time now and it is capable of some amazing results with very little effort from the user. Luminar excels at making photo processing accessible and intuitive.

It is surprising perhaps that Adobe would make a shift in this direction, in some ways almost dumbing down their software to provide ‘quick fix’ features.

The out of the box Lumina 4 example below is comparible to the Adobe
