06 Jan Fuji XT20 Review

The Fuji XT20 was not a camera I wanted to love. It was meant to be a stop gap for me. I, like many was waiting for the arrival of the now released Fuji XE3 to replace my long serving XE2…. but I was impatient. I couldn’t wait for Fuji to announce the XE3 and wanted to get my hand on the smaller body with the new and stunning 24MP Xtrans iii sensor.
Those who know me or follow my work will be aware i’m primarily a Xpro2 shooter. I use it for professional work shooting weddings and headshots for performing artists. I have access to an XT2 and have previously owned the XT1 and all the XE models. By far, my favourite form-factor is the rangefinder design of the XE and Xpro range. I planned to pick up the XT20 and use it as a backup and casual camera I could use on a day to day basis as well as weddings.
I have had the camera for a full wedding season now and i’ve using it continuously since March 2017. Although the camera hasn’t quite converted me away from the rangefinder form-factor, It is a very…very nice camera to use.
Compared the the previous generation of Fuji cameras, the XT20 is a big improvement. Its fast, snappy and can hold its own against the XT2 in many respects, at just a fraction of the price.
Some of the key features include:
• 24MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor
• Up to 325 selectable Auto Focus points (169 phase detection)
• 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder
• 3 inch tilting touchscreen
• 4K UHD video at up to 30 fps, with clean output over HDMI
• 8 fps continuous shooting
• Dials for exposure compensation, shutter speed and drive mode
Of course it falls short in certain areas compared to its bigger brothers. For example the electronic viewfinder is not as impressive (although seemingly identical to the XPro2 EVF). The buffer is much smaller and burst shooting will fill it very quickly. The camera is a little too small to hold comfortably as well. Weather sealing is also absent compared to the flagship models.
