17 Oct Fuji 18mm F1.4 – Real World Review

I have been using the new Fuji 18mm f1.4 for a few weeks now and felt that is was worth sharing some early thoughts. I used to own the excellent Fuji 16mm f1.4 and I’ve included some example photographs from that lens also for comparison. The 16mm f1.4 lens certainly felt like it has some ‘character’ and the new 18mm f1.4 also manages this trick.
The image below was snapped in my backyard. A simple shot of some Cookies and coffee but the Acros Film Simulation and the good looking bokeh have rendered a pleasing image.

Fuji 16mm f1.4 Examples
The Fuji 16mm f1.4 is a fabulous lens and has some real character.. here are some shots that I captured with this lens as a comparison to the 18mm. The shallow DOF facilitated by this fast lens can really help separate subjects from the background which is useful for street photography

18mm f1.4 Sharpness
The 18mm f1.4 is pretty sharp even at wide open. This 100% crop of a JPG shows some crisp detail.

Here are some shots taken with the 18mm f1.4 – I’m really enjoying using this lens as a general walk-around. It has fast, silent focus and it’s close focusing allows for some creativity with depth of field. I
